The impact of rapid urbanization and economic growth of cities in Africa is now common knowledge, yet it can not be over emphasised. At the same time the impact of climate change is now day to day reality. Particularly in coastal African cities that now experience significant increases in sea level rise, rainfall and flooding.
Inspired by the innovative and resourceful living in the informal water community of Makoko in Lagos, NLÉ explores this territory as a contemporary model – with Makoko Floating School as an urban, sociocultural, political and economy catalyst – for adapting coastal African cities to the impact of climate change in the age of rapid urbanization.
African Water Cities Project is a research and documentation project towards the adaptation of coastal and water based African cities/communities to the impacts of urbanization, housing/resource shortages and climate change.
