The proposed design for Sønderborg Airport terminal, envisioned by NLÉ, celebrates regional identity and environmental consciousness through a striking, timber-framed roof canopy that becomes the iconic feature of the building. Emphasizing sustainability, the use of timber as the primary structural material not only minimizes the carbon footprint but also harmonizes with the surrounding landscape, bringing warmth and natural textures into the passenger experience. The expansive canopy, inspired by the shapes, rhythms of wings and the Scandinavian landscape, forms a welcoming gesture to travelers, sheltering the terminal while allowing natural light to permeate the spaces below.
Our design approach acknowledges the organisation and considerations put into the current design, and proposes simple yet grand gestures of opening up the central lobby and introducing a canopy and a dome into the heart of the terminal. Transparency is a defining aspect of the design, achieved through seamless views from landside to airside towards the beautiful fjord. This visual connection creates a sense of openness and clarity, allowing passengers to intuitively navigate the terminal while fostering a feeling of calmness by connecting them to both the journey ahead and the surrounding environment, blurring the boundary of travel – often experienced in many airports.
Inside, the timber structure’s radial lines and high ceilings imbue the terminal with a sense of airy spaciousness. The use of natural materials extends throughout, with timber beams and earthen walls serving both as structural and aesthetic elements, unifying the interior and exterior. Carefully positioned skylight dome optimize daylighting, reducing the need for artificial lighting and enhancing energy efficiency.
Sustainability is integral to every aspect of the terminal, from passive solar orientation to rainwater harvesting systems and energy-efficient heating. The design also incorporates adaptable spaces that can be modified for future expansions or shifts in passenger needs, ensuring longevity and resilience. NLÉ’s vision for Sønderborg Airport is not only to create an efficient transit space but to craft an experience that celebrates nature, regional culture, and sustainable design in equal measure.
